Jet Kingdom Preseason Game 2 Review
The Jet Kingdom sorts out the hits and misses from the New York Jets 27-14 win over the Washington Redskins in this second preseason game of 2006.
This was the night for the number two quarterback to make his stand, to secure his spot on the roster should Chad Pennington go down. While the score points to an offense efficiency, the real deal is that neither Patrick Ramsey, Brooks Bollinger or Kellen Clemens showed too much last night.
Patrick Ramsey was the starter for the night so got the most time with the first team. He threw 6-9 and was sacked twice. He showed zip on the ball but held onto it too long in the pocket. The decision making just didn't look crisp on his part. Brooks Bollinger, probably fighting for any spot on this team, looked better. He was able to move the team in a long drive going 10-16 for 69 yards. When under pressure, Bollinger scrambled well for 35 total yards but just like last year when it came to the end zone his passes were not on target costing the Jets 4 points. Kellen Clemens, the third draft pick in the 2006 draft, had mostly garbage time but was able to at least put a touch down on the boards with a nice scramble and pass back over his shoulder to Reggie Newhouse another rookie.
The running game last week was abysmal and Coach Mangini must have taken it to heart as the Jets brought out all three running backs and ran them hard for the entire game. Derrick Blaylock got the start and ran well for 46 yards on 10 attempts. He seemed to have more power and poise then he did last week, but still didn't smash he way through too many tackles for extra yardage. Leon Washington, the 4th round 2006 draft pick who stands just 5-8, has deceptive speed. Washington did a good job as a change of pace back and when given a hole made some nice runs rushing for 17 yards on 6 attempts. Washington also returned a kickoff to the house in a great 87 yard sprint beating the kicker for the final block. Cedric Houston certainly looks like the more powerful back but only seems to be able to pick up a handful of yards each time although he did have one 20 yard run. The Jets rumor mill still points to the front office trying to land a starting running back but these three proved they might have something to offer in the regular season.
The offense wasn't lighting anything up with mostly screen and short passes so the receiving core didn't get too much time to shine. Washington did well out of the backfield but the staring WRs of Coles, Cotchery and McCareins didn't show much tonight. The one trick play that had rookie Brad Smith take the reverse all the way for a 61 yard run and touchdown was well executed and the center Nick Mangold and Patrick Ramsey put down two good blocks to make it happen. Brad Smith showed why he put up over 4,000 yards in college running as a quarterback as he burst through the hole and went mostly untouched into the end zone.
Defensively the Jets were much improved last night keeping the Redskins running in check. Bryan Thomas got some pressure on the quarterback getting a sack. The Jets defense also came away with two interceptions. Overall though, they looked hot and cold showing moments of greatness but also giving up bigger passing plays letting five Redskin receivers have plays over 20 yards each.
The special teams did the most impressing last night with Leon Washington scoring on a kickoff return and Ben Graham punting the ball down to behind the 10 yard line twice. Mike Nugent went 2-2 last night on field goals with is longest being 32 yards.
Preseason games are both telling and meaningless as is this win over the Washington Redskins. What it does show is that the Jets wanted to do two things they didn't do last week against the Bucs and that was to run the ball and stop the run. The Jets ran the ball well piling up 216 total yards and stopped any long run driven drives which was good. The Redskins did play without their number one running back Clinton Portis which might have factored in to them only rushing for 84 total yards. Head coach Eric Mangini looks like he making progress and right now that is good enough and what we are looking for.
Next week the Jets host the Giants in the yearly pre-season grudge match at the Meadowlands.
