AFC 2007 Draft Grades

The 2007 NFL Draft was not considered to be very deep in terms of talent but there were some surprising and good picks to be had. We take a look at the AFC East and how those teams did in the draft.

Miami Dolphins

The passing on Brady Quinn at the number nine spot in the draft might go down as one of the worst mistakes in Dolphins history and that is saying a lot. It is not so much that they passed on the QB but that they picked up a punt returner who is hurt and might not make the start of training camp. The 26 year old John Beck from BYU might be a interesting project at quarterback but doesn't seem to fill the need for this year with Trent Green still not on the Dolphins roster. Picking up a center is good but two?

Grade: D+

Buffalo Bills

With seven picks in the draft and many needs the Bills did a fairly good job of filling their holes. The RB Marshawn Lynch from California better be ready to take on a lot of pressure this year filling in the shoes of Willis McGahee. They also need help at line backer so the Posluszny pick looks good although Penn State line backers don't always pan out. The curious choice was the quarterback in the third round from Stanford. With JP Loseman not showing championship presence, is this a replacement? Buffalo gets a knock for not putting any picks into their offensive line.

Grade: B

New England Patriots

I guess the question now is not who will win the Super Bowl but whether Tom Brady will be the MVP again. The Patriots played the draft like a fiddle, trading away one of their first round picks and picking up Randy Moss from Oakland for one in the 4th round. If that were the only thing they did in the draft, it would have been an A but picking up the hard-hitting free-safety in Meriweather just makes this better.

Grade: A

New York Jets

The New York Jets get a fair grade for moving up and getting their two key guys in Harris and Revis. They get a plus on top of that because you have to factor in the Thomas Jones trade as it was for a draft pick.

Grade: B+
