New York Jets 2009 Draft Review
A review and some grades of the New York Jets 2009 NFL draft.
Much like the 2007 draft, the New York Jets went into it with more picks than players when they came out. While the Jets had the biggest splash of a draft, how did it all grade add up.
Mark Sanchez (QB)
The Jets traded up from number 17 to number 5 with Eric Mangini and the Cleveland Browns to grab what is arguably the best QB in a weak quarterback draft. Mark Sanchez played in USC for only one full season but did so with great success, winning the Rose Bowl. Sanchez has the physical talents, the smarts and comes from the right type of system to project a good NFL career but he is unproven in that he didn't play a lot in college. For the Jets, this is a huge leap going after someone they met with and loved. It looks like the Jets got their franchise quarterback and for that they get high marks.
Jet Kingdom Grade: A
Shonn Greene (RB)
With Thomas Jones looking more and more like a short term problem not a long term solution the Jets started day two of the draft by trading in more of their picks and jumping up to the top of the third round to take Shonn Greene the running back from Iowa. Greene brings a pair of strong legs and a speed that should work in a three back system this year and replace Jones next year.
Jet Kingdom Grade: B
Matt Slauson (OG)
Grabbing a guard in the later rounds is good for the depth chart but and with the Bill Callahan connection Slauson was a known commodity.
Jet Kingdom Grade: C+
Overall Grade
If you count the Lito Shepard trade, the Jets really came away with four players, three of which will look like they will start in the 2009 season. High marks go for the big move on Sanchez, but leaving the day with only 3 new rookies to add to the roster was not great. The wide receiver position is still a huge hole to fill and depth along the defensive line would have helped. A solid day but a little too little to get and A.
Jet Kingdom 2009 New York Jets Draft Grade: B+
