Week One Review - Jets 23, Titans 16
The Jet Kingdom weekly review of the New York Jets game and the Throne Picks for that week.
Chad Pennington is back and no bigger statement could be made by him than coming out and putting up 319 yards, 2 TDs and 0 interceptions for the day. Pennington is not known for airing the ball out but he had a 41 yard pass that looked like his arm was repaired Bionic Man style.
The Jets started off the game by taking a 16 point lead due to some good moving of the ball by Pennington and the offense as well as some nice picks by free agency pick up Andre Dyson. The Titans switched in and out their first round draft pick quarterback Vince Young with Kerry Collins to get some spark going which eventually got the game tied. In the end the Jets went down the field and scored a touchdown to win the game 23 to 16.
Knights of the Game
The Jet Kingdom Knights of the game have to start with Chad Pennington. If his numbers don't speak enough for him, getting up after that one vicious sack should. He played like a man who had never seen an operating table, let alone been under the knife. The second knight goes to Laveranues Coles who put up 153 yards and is already off of half of the fantasy draft boards this morning. Coles played with passion and toughness, basically the way we have seen him play in the past and the way we expect to see him play in the future.
The last knighting has to go to new rookie head coach, Eric Mangini for his first win. Mangini must be very pleased with his new team as they played a full 60 minute game and besides giving up a 16 point lead looked like they were in control of the game.
Fools of the Game
The first fools of the game has to go running backs Derrick Blaylock and Kevan Barlow who both ran poorly behind the rookie offensive line. Blaylock had 19 attempts for 36 yards (1.9 ypc) and Barlow didn't do much better with 11 attempts for 35 yards (3.2 ypc). Maybe the blocks and holes weren't there but those kinds of numbers are not going to get it done against better run defense teams than the Titans. We were surprised not to see rookie Leon Washington and second year man Cedric Houston get any carries.
The second and much bigger fool goes to second year kicker Mike Nugent who missed a total of 7 points in one extra point and two field goals. We expect much more from Nugent this year and that was not the start we were looking for. Mangini's dog house is going to need a new bed for Nugent to sleep in.
We would like to see Cedric Houston and Leon Washington involved in the game next week against the Patriots to shore up the running game.
In Other Kingdoms
The rest of the AFC East didn't look so good as the Dolphins got beaten by the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers and the Patriots barely got a win against the Bills at home. This week the Dolphins get the Bills and the Patriots down to our castle for a little head coach battle. It is 100% pure AFC East match up this week.
Throne Picks Review (4-0)
What a way to start the season as the Jet Kingdom Weekly Throne Picks were a perfect set. We picked the Jets, Steelers, Patriots and Colts all who won. Our scores were closer than our commentary but wins are wins and we will take them.
Check back this Thursday as we publish the second Jet Kingdom Weekly Throne Picks.
