Jester's Keep - Week 4 Analysis
The Jet Kingdom Jester takes aim at the Jets offering a unique perspective of the game. Here is his analysis of game 4 plus a few other tidbits.
After only one week of riding the Chad Pennington bandwagon I am officially jumping off. I am calling for a quarterback who can throw the ball more then 10 yards down the field in a 2 minute offense. I am looking for a quarterback who won't make that gut wrenching play that makes you throw the remote at the wall - please let that guy be Kellen Clemens. Chad did what every Jet fan should have expected at this point - he got us close but then failed at the end up in Buffalo losing 17-14 to a first time starting rookie quarterback.
Offense
Throw the damn ball down the field or get out of the game! this dink and dunk stuff is all fine and dandy but the fact is they didn't score on either of their 2 minute drill drives because we were chewing up 5 yards at a time. In the first half Cotchery made a great 1 handed grab which was followed up by a Marinoesque fake spike play executed to perfection by Chad and Lav Coles. Unfortunately Nugent clanged the field goal attempt off the post. Granted, Nugent had a chance but they could have scored a touchdown if they just would have taken a shot or two down the field.
Thomas Jones vanished once again. Why can't the Jets get a consistent running game going? Maybe their offense line is to blame. D'Brick had another 2 holding penalties - is it still too early to start calling him a bust? I think we give him until game 8 - after that he better start dominating. Pennington had a streak of 15 straight completions in the second half but it was broken by an interception on a weak throw to the sideline.
Defense
The Jets actually played pretty well on defense. They managed to stop the run which is something that has troubled them all season long and they forced 2 turnovers and sacked rookie quarterback Trent Edwards twice. Why does David Barrett still have a job, let alone a starting job? Every team's strategy is to find 36 on the field and throw it towards him. He is really awful - probably one of the worst starting corners in the league. On the other end of the spectrum Dorrelle Revis made his first career start and actually got taken advantage of a little bit. Josh Reed and Lee Evans were able to beat him a few times too many for my taste. He still played far better then veteran Barrett. As soon as they replaced Barrett with Dyson something good happened - a Dyson INT in the endzone.
Where was Kerry Rhodes?? I am so used to seeing him around the ball on every play. He was nowhere to be found today. Lee Evans had a total of 29 yards coming into this game - he had over 50 in the first half today - why am I not surprised?
Tidbits
Aren't those ticket scanners the greatest technology advancement as it relates to the fan experience made in a long time? I have forgotten my tickets to a game on a number of occasions and in the past I would be screwed. Now, I can just go to the customer service window and tell them my name and show them my ID and they can print me out new tickets. They can only do this because they can properly track every ticket that is used in real-time due to the scanning process rather then just ripping the ticket and counting it later. Great job by whoever thought that one up!
