Jester's Keep - New York Jets Week One Analysis

The Jet Kingdom court jester takes gives a view of the week one happenings to the New York Jets.

In one word the week one loss could be summed up as 'ugly'. In every which way the Jets displayed just how much of a gap there still is between themselves and the hated New England Patriots. Going into the game I thought the Jets had crossed over into the realm of contenders; after the week one massacre I have already changed my mind. I was expecting a whole lot more from both sides of the ball, including special teams.

Defense

Sitting up in God's country at The Meadowlands I did not once see the Jets defensive line come anywhere close to Tom Brady. No wonder he hooked up with Randy Moss for 183 yards and a touchdown. As Allen Iverson would say, PRACTICE!@!, man, we talkin' 'bout PRACTICE!@! I guess you don't have to practice when Tom Brady is your QB and David Barrett lines up on the opposite side of srimage. Jonathan Vilma really looks lost, too many times he just missed in the hole allowing either Maroney or Morris through to the second level of the defense. On the bright side first round pick Derrelle Revis did look good wherever he was lined up. I was particularly impressed with his tackling ability.

Offense

The offense although not horrific didn't do a whole lot better. Thomas Jones got off to a forgetable start to his Jets career rushing for only 42 yards on 14 carries. That is not the output that Jets fans were expecting when Jones was obtained from the Bears for a second round pick. Chad Pennnington played a decent game tossing a pair of touchdown passes to his favorite target Laverneus Coles. For all those who are calling for Kellen Clemens to come in and play this year, please shut up! He is not ready and does not give the Jets the same chance to win that Pennington does which was aparent after Chad went down briefly in the third quarter.

Special Teams

A usually strong Jets special teams was put to shame by Ellis Hobbs who set an NFL record by returning a kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown. I was sitting there thinking that Mike Nugent had been working out strengthening his leg in the offseason in order to kick the ball into the end-zone on kickoffs. All had gone according to plan until Hobbs foolishly ran the ball out from 8 yards deep. No more than ten seconds later the air had seemingly been let out of the building and it was crystal clear to everyone that this was not the Jets day.

Next Week

Looking forward to next week the Jets have the privalege of traveling to Baltimore for the Ravens home opener. Luckily for Gang Green it is being reported by ESPN that Ray Lewis suffered a torn right tricepts muscle on the third play of the game Monday night versus Cinci even though he continued to play the rest of the game. Regardless of whether or not Lewis is on the field the Jets will have a hard time moving the ball against the Ravens. Both lines, offense and defense, will have to step up and play much better. The offense will be challenged by the most unpredictable and active defenses in the league. The defense will have to deal with a perenial Jets killer Willis Magahee. For the Jets an 0-2 start could be right around the corner...
