The Jester Ranks the New York Jets Receivers

The New York Jets receiving corps ranked from top to bottom. A pre-season review of what the Jets receiving corps looks like for the upcoming 2008 season.

The Jester Ranks the New York Jets Receivers

Cotchery should step up this season to become the Jets #1 receiver.

The Jets receiving corps got a huge boost when Brett Favre jumped on board - which ones will benefit the most? Which one will step up into the number 3 slot? Here is a look at the pre-season rankings of our receivers according to the Jester:
  1. Jericho Cotchery
  2. Jericho has the opportunity of a lifetime this season, more then any of his teamates, to work with All-Time Great Favre. Cotchery is ready to step up and become the #1 guy - especially with a guy like Coles right behind him. He is tough in the middle of the field, has adequate speed to go down the field, and had amazing hands. His greatest attribute though is his YAC abilities - Favre will sure give him enough opportunities this year with the ball in his hands - it is his time to shine. I predict at least 90 catches and 1200 yards w/ 8 tds.

  3. Laveranues Coles
  4. Coles is the clear #2 in my mind. He is closer at this point in his career to a 1a. then a definitive #1 then Cotchery is yet Cotchery is considerably younger. Coles also is a little upset this summer that we got rid of his long time friend and teamate Chad Pennington. Coles shouldn't be too upset though because he will get balls thrown to him now that won't get his head knocked off by opposing safeties, well, maybe he will, but at least not as often. I predict 78 catches and 984 yards w/ 6 tds.

  5. Brad Smith
  6. Smith has in my mind distinguished himself as a playmaker with the ball in his hands. He also earns points for being ultra versitile being able to play RB, Special Teams, and even QB if necessary. This however is about his receiving skills which have improved dramatically in the pre-season. He is electric with the ball in his hands and I cannot wait to watch him get the ball in the slot on a quick slant or on a bubble screen. I predict 37 catches and 530 yards w/ 4 tds.

  7. Chansi Stuckey
  8. Stuckey has come on in the pre-season as a quick inside guy that could be a potential 3rd down outlet for Favre. Stuckey could have been drafted higher 2 years back but teams were worried about injuries, rightly so, as he missed his entire rookie season of 2007 with an injury. He is back on the field though in 2008 looking to make an impact on the field. I predict 27 catches and 368 yards and 3 tds.

  9. Wallace Wright
  10. Wright edges out 2008 draft pick Marcus Henry for the 5th spot in the top 5. Wright is simply more polished and a more valuable player on the team this season. That is not to say Henry won't move up in years to come but this year the experience of Wright wins out. He is also a special teams ace which Mangini loves. I predict Wallace will have more tackles then receptions this year but that is ok because that is what he is being asked to do.

Dustin Keller, Chris Baker, Leon Washington, and Bubba Franks will all play a role in the passing game as well. The Jets like to spread the ball around and so does their QB. I expect Keller to have an impact when he is manned up against a linebacker and Washington should get at least 2-3 screens per game as Favre is a screen master. All in all the receivers should be more productive then they were last season - particularly on 20-30 yard patterns.
