While being a Homer (Simpson) in a lot of situations is a good thing (cartoon, never grow old, famous) in the case of a sports it is an insult. Being called a homer in the sports world means that you are someone who shows absolute blind loyalty to a team and totally ignoring any shortcomings or faults they might have.
