Olympic Stadium Moving Forward

Olympic Stadium Moving Forward 12/14/04 New York City's Olympic Bid received a major boost in November as government agencies approved plans for the New York Sports and Convention Center (NYSCC) which will serve as the Olympic Stadium in 2012. The state's economic development agency endorsed the NYSCC project, part of a broader plan to transform large tracts of underutilized land in the center of the city into a residential, commercial, and recreational hub. The dynamic, mixed-use facility will host conventions and sporting events. In 2012, it will become the centerpiece of a New York Olympic and Paralympic Games, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athletics competitions, and football finals. "This project is essential for the city's economic future and is moving forward regardless of the IOC's decision on the 2012 Games," said New York City's Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding and NYC2012 Founder Daniel L. Doctoroff. "It will create an incredible showcase for the Games in 2012 and a powerful legacy for the future of New York." The Department of City Planning praised the project in its final environmental impact statement for expanding affordable housing, creating new parkland, and connecting the community to the waterfront. "This plan is a once in a lifetime opportunity," New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said. "The NYSCC will enable us to host spectacular events, including the Olympic Games, generate a legacy of development and improved facilities, and inspire generations of New Yorkers for decades to come."
