How Big Apple Olympic dream turned sour

New York pulled out all the stops for last week's visit by Olympic inspectors with jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon and fireworks over Central Park bringing classic American razzmatazz to their bid for the 2012 Games.
But no amount of sweet notes or dramatic pyrotechnics can hide the chorus of disapproval illustrated by the International Olympic Committee poll which is revealed today.
New York told the IOC in its detailed bid book last November that support for its campaign among New Yorkers was "strong and consistent" with nine surveys in the last four years showing a range of public backing between 64 and 79 per cent.
But the IOC's polling shows just 59 per cent of New Yorkers in favour of the Games with only 54 per cent of people across the country backing the idea.
Just two months ago, New York's bid appeared to be launching a serious challenge to frontrunners Paris and London in the race for the 2012 Games.
First of all, you can't get New Yorker's to agree on anything let alone the Olympics. I say 50% is pretty strong for this voting population. Hell, you can get elected president with 51%.
