Council environmental committee chair backs stadium
The chair of the City Council's Environmental Protection Committee today endorsed the stadium proposed by the New York Jets for Manhattan's far West Side.
Council member James Gennaro was joined by Lou Coletti, the president of the Building Trades Employers Association, as he stated his support, citing "the Jets' extraordinary commitment to issues of sustainability and environmentally friendly design." His support comes as City Council Speaker Gifford Miller introduces a bill to require the council's approval for a stadium.
"The move will have the effect of removing nearly 20,000 cars off the road each gameday significantly reducing air pollution throughout the region," said Mr. Gennaro, backing the Jets' claim that most attendees would take mass transit. In addition, he said, the Jets' stadium design relies on "green power sources in upstate New York" and will produce more than enough energy "to meet all of our football needs."
