NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Jets football team on Wednesday said it would file a lawsuit against Cablevision Systems Corp., the latest salvo in their high-stakes feud over whether New York City should build a stadium that would be the football franchise's home field. In a press release, the Jets said Cablevision, one of the principal cable television operators in the New York area, is blocking the team from buying time to communicate its position in favor of the facility proposed for Manhattan's west side. Cablevision has been embroiled in a bitter battle opposing a Jets stadium, which could pose a competitive threat to the cable operator's Madison Square Garden, a Manhattan arena that hosts basketball, hockey and other sporting events. Madison Square Garden has proposed a rival plan to develop a mixed-use community centered on residential housing. New York's transit agency, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, owns the rail yard above which the New York Jets football team wants to build a $1.4 billion stadium. The agency wants $300 million for the air rights above the property. But the Jets have offered only $100 million. Madison Square Garden has offered $600 million for the air rights, although the $250 million cost of building a platform over the rail yard would have to be deducted. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is counting on the Jets' stadium as a centerpiece in New York City's bid to host the 2012 Olympics. A Cablevision spokesman could not be reached for comment.
